Eye of Mountain on the Lake

Last updated on June 5, 2022

I see mountains and valleys against still water,
Rugged symmetry with creases all between.
Yawn of cavern bears echoes of slaughter,
Oval void so sweet and pristine.

What resides within that hollowed helm
Sauntering softly in its conquered abyss,
Caressing whispers beneath the realm,
Gracefully delicate as adulterous kiss?

It never left that cavernous maw—
Pitted windows into the mountainside—
Or clutched the beholders’ morbid awe,
Still, it managed to be glorified.

I have never peered into those pupiled caves
To explore those reaches with faithful leap.
For what could master such powerful slaves
Yet remain elusive in that fathomless deep?
